The downtown area is currently following most of the criteria of the national Main Street program, although it is not yet designated as a Main Street community. Professional architects and planners have completed a design and traffic flow plan for the area and the plan is being implemented. Most of the downtown area has been designated at the commercial historic district and changes to buildings must comply with the guidelines established by the Secretary of the Interior. An architect has sketched specific recommendations for the restorations on Main Street and the plans are available at no cost to the owners of the buildings.

Hohenwald is currently evaluating its retail mix and seeking to improve existing retail businesses, encourage local start up retail businesses and recruit additional retail.

In the East Main Corridor, Wal-Mart has just opened a Wal-Mart Super Center. The Super Store is expected to enhance the draw of shoppers from surrounding counties and further establish Hohenwald as a sub-regional shopping area.
